Alaskan searches reaping results
In Alaska, exploration in and near the Aleutian islands is turning up lots of hot water. Separate drilling sites on Akutan and near Bristol Bay have tapped water at 360 and 250 degrees F, respectively. The Akutan resource is also quite shallow, and the state hopes it will power local communities as well as North America’s largest seafood plant. On the bay, Naknek Electric Association has drilled the first well, to a more than 10,000 feet, with second and third wells on the horizon. The association hope to have a 25 MW plant up and running in 2012, replacing the regions current diesel power generation.
