Alaskan town surveying for geothermal
In Alaska, Akutan, with a population 713, has deployed a geophysical survey team using electro-magnetic probes to investigate the potential of a nearby geothermal resource. The team will test as many as 50 locations. The hope is to be able to replace a seven MW diesel-generated power plant which produces electricity at a cost 32 cents + a kilowatt/hour, which is on the order of three times what Anchorage residents pay. Preliminary results suggest resources could be found at a depth of about 1,500 feet.
